Queenstown
Queenstown is situated
on
the shores of beautiful Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by the majestic Remarkables
mountains
in the snow-rich Southern Alps of New Zealand’s South Island. Queenstown
is 310 metres (1020 feet) above sea level and is an alpine adventure playground
for snow skiers in the winter, water skiers and
wine enthusiasts in the summer, and thrill seeking adventurers all year round.
Queenstown's surrounding
environs are as spectacular and diverse as the food, wine and fine art that can
be enjoyed in this magical location .
Queenstown and the
Southern Lakes region has a long history, first starting with the Maori coming
in search of pounamu (greenstone) and the giant Moa bird. Next came the
gold miners when gold was found in the region in the 1860's. The gold is
now all but gone, with wine, in particular pinot noir, the
new gold to be found in the hills and becoming a wine enthusiasts delight.
The dramatic landscape, with
rugged mountains,
majestic lakes and crystal clear air, has drawn adventurers and filmmakers to
capture
their own images of this unspoilt alpine region. Queenstown is visited by
a wide range of people from all
over
the world wanting
to relax and absorb its alpine energy, including stars from film and music, and
a US President.
During the winter
months Queenstown becomes a base camp for skiers tearing up the
slopes of the four
nearby ski fields (Coronet Peak, Remarkables, Cardrona and
Treble Cone). The snow and facilities are the equal of anywhere
else in the world.
In summer Queenstown
is a favourite holiday resort for those wanting to explore the world class
tramping tracks
(Routeburn and Hollyford tracks), absorbing the stunning
scenery on the way, or for those just wanting to relax
on the golf course or at one of the many winery cafes in the Gibbston Valley and
Bannockburn winery regions.
Adrenaline pumping
bungy jumping or jet boat riding through the Shotover River Canyons can be
enjoyed all year round, as can a more leisurely trip to Walter Peak High Country
Farm on the TSS Earnslaw.
A holiday to
Queenstown is not complete without viewing the magnificent fine art in the
Queenstown Gallery of Fine Art at 61 Beach Street (opposite Earnslaw Park next
to the lake) and purchasing an original New Zealand artwork of the stunning
local landscape to remind you of this most magical hideaway for years to come.
We can deliver worldwide and have your masterpiece arrive on your return home.
