Paul Cato is an accomplished New Zealand painter whose works celebrate tranquillity and nature's beauty. He loves to paint scenes that people can relax with - vistas to gaze at for a brief period of soul-refreshing and which evoke emotions of calmness and rest. His landscapes rarely include any evidence of human interference - a respite in a busy world. "Realistic impressionism" is how Paul generally describes his style. Paul Cato paints mainly from the world-renowned Queenstown and Fiordland region of southern New Zealand. His favourite inspiration has come from the magnificent and precipitous shapes and spaces of this area. This vast wilderness with it's dramatic atmospheric effects and the eerie silences rival the beauty of all Earth's scenic wonders. A master story-teller in paint, Paul pays particular attention to the qualities of sunlight in each scene - it's intense heat and the converse coolness of the shadows. Backlit and atmospheric conditions are a feature in most of Paul's works as he creates the illusion of the multi-dimensions of nature on a flat canvas.
