Jan Hart was born in Southland, New Zealand. Jan completed her first commissioned work as a teenager and has worked as a professional artist most of her life. Oil, watercolour, airbrushing and dyes are Jan's chosen media, and more recently oil pastel and gouache. Alongside her art making she undertakes fine pen and ink drawings displayed in publications. Her paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout New Zealand and overseas. Colour, light and texture are Jan's lifeblood. Through her paintings ordinary subjects take on a life of their own. She has an intrinsic affinity with nature which shows in her paintings. Jan specialises in land and seascapes and will sometimes use flowers or birds taken from her surroundings. By travelling throughout New Zealand she gains inspiration for her paintings on both land and water. Jan is able to create detailed and unique works in the difficult media of oil pastel and gouache.
