Russell J Winterburn

Russell John Winterburn commenced his art career at the age of 8 by doing a detailed sketch of Winston Churchill perfectly.  He grew up in a home surrounded by fine art and oil paintings by his forebears, namely his great grandfather Alexander Forbes of Aberdeen.  His grandmother sketched portraits, and by being immersed in this environment, he extended his talent by composing seascapes, landscapes and portraits with equal passion.  This childhood past-time was perceived as normal by his parents, and allowed his natural passion to continue to develop.  Unsurprisingly, given this freedom to develop, Russell chose to study the techniques of the Great Masters and has applied their 'glazing' mastery to his own paintings.  This has produced a unique and individual style for which Russell has become well renowned.

Some of his works include the Maori Queen, Dame Te Atairangikaahu and Dame Whina Cooper, along with many other well known Maori icons.  Being part Maori helps him to capture the 'wairua' of his subjects.  Russell is diversified and able to work with the varied themes requested of him by commissions.  He is enjoying the success of many years of dedicated painting and feels that he has not as yet peaked, with endless compositions still to unfold.  Russell also excels in Equine art.
